Johannesburg, 15 April 2021 – Europe’s No.1 selling Scotch whisky, Ballantine’s – a Pernod Ricard brand – announced the launch of their global digital campaign called Stay True Cities. This campaign spotlights the authenticity of our local cities, highlighting real artists and places showcasing them to the world.
This film follows the lives of two of the most dynamic DJs in South Africa who are doing just that – keeping it real through their music and showing off what is unique about the cities they represent.
This partnership with DJ Stokie from Soweto, and Pretoria based DJ, famously known as DBN Gogo, highlights the influence of the popular music sounds of Amapiano and how it shakes up these respective cities.
Ballantine’s SA Junior Brand Manager Vuyisile Dlepu explained that “South Africa has become world renowned for its music and we’ve found that different parts of the country produce different sounds. Through our continued support of the music industry we felt it was necessary to tell the story of two cities with artists that have stayed true to who they are. We’ll continue to tell the stories of different artists, genres and parts of SA in the future as we accelerate our True Music platform.”
House music has evolved throughout the years and has firmly shaped the culture of entertainment for both cities. In Soweto, DJ Stokie is well known for his deep soulful vinyl mixes – a sound that he has mastered as well as added a fusion of Amapiano through his recent hits. These sounds have made him a household brand with residencies across the popular clubs in Soweto and the rest of the country.
“I’ve always believed that one’s journey can be best narrated by the one who experienced it, I am really excited about this Stay True Cities film and how it has captured my journey for everyone to see,” said Stokie
Pretoria based DJ, DBN Gogo is trailblazing the Pretoria street culture through her sets. The Khuza Gogo hitmaker acknowledges the capital city for setting music trends in South Africa as she celebrates the layers and sub-genres of house music that is still enjoyed by Pretorians today.
“It’s gonna be a movie, literally; my journey and the truth behind what music means to me. Sit back and get comfortable as you enter my daily reality, let’s have fun!!!” commented DBN Gogo
Ballantine’s is celebrating the culture of amapiano in these two cities through the experiences of DBN Gogo and DJ Stokie as they continue to leave a mark in this new wave of entertainment. To watch the film, please click here
