Johannesburg: 29 April 2021 Today marks the 39th annual celebration of dance around the world – International Dance Day. This year, Red Bull is inviting everyone to celebrate this day by joining all the top dancers in Mzansi on the Red Bull social media platforms for a multi genre dance experience on their Instagram and TikTok pages.
Our favourite Mzansi movers and shakers will be showcasing the amazing dance styles of the South African dance scenes; such as SB and Tebza’s dynamic Spantsula and Sbhujwa showcase. The likes of Sne Mbatha, SAND1, 250Machine, Rudi Smit, Verb as well as the winners of the national Red Bull BC One will all be partaking in this global digital takeover.
Through the curation of stellar experiences and opportunities such as the Red Bull BC One and Red Bull Dance Your Style competitions, South African dancers are constantly cultivating their skills and breeding new dance forms that shape the street culture movement.
Recently, Red Bull BC One held the national final in Cape Town where B-Boy Benny and B-girl Courtnae’ Paul were crowned the 2021 South African champions. They will represent the country at the Red Bull BC One World Final in Gdańsk, Poland in November 2021.
Red Bull Dance Your Style is a one-on-one competition that allows the all dynamic street dance styles to compete on one stage. The competition has revealed incredible dance styles of South African dancers to a global audience.
The winner of the inaugural Red Bull Dance Your Style in 2018 in South Africa and, Teboho ‘Tebza’ Diphehlo has taken pantsula dance to the world through a series of virtual global workshops. “Dance for South Africans is a universal language and is in everything we do as a nation.” says Tebza.
International dancer, Angyil, who has roots based in local dance styles, reflects on what International Dance Day means to her. “To me International Dance Day means paying respect to the lineage of dance creators that have come before you; to pay your respect to those gone and still with us that have contributed to something we all love even if you’re not a dancer,” says Red Bull dancer Angyil.
Be a part of the International Dance Day celebrations with Red Bull by following and engaging with the dance takeover on the Red Bull social media platforms.
