Launches Pre-Order for upcoming album ‘POPSTAR’
Johannesburg, Friday, 16 October 2020 – After announcing on Monday, today, award winning rapper, Yanga Chief, drops his new single ‘BBAF’ and launches the pre-order for his upcoming album ‘POPSTAR’ due for release later this year.
Even though the title of the song suggests that the song is about SA female rapper Boity, the record showcases Yanga’s incredible Xhosa influenced rap cadence and deep dives into how he perceives the industry and his position in it. He positions himself as the godfather of the SA Hip Hop industry that deserves the cream of the crop, when it comes to the culture. After announcing the new single ‘Yanga Chief revealed an iconic cover for his eagerly awaited album ‘Pop Star’. Known for celebrating his Xhosa royalty, Yanga Chief collaborated with praised South African designer, Laduma Ngxokolo, of MXHOSA on a ‘masklava’ (a combination of a mask and a balaclava) piece for the cover of Pop Star. Watch here as Yanga Chief and Laduma detail the idea behind creating the masklava.
“PopStar” will drop a year after he released his award winning project “Becoming A Popstar” which critics claim to be his greatest work yet.
Speaking to OkayAfrica about his recent SAMA award Yanga Chief expressed that he “… had already gotten so used to not getting that type of recognition that even the nomination felt like a win. So the actual win itself, it’s hard to compartmentalise it. It’s easier when I reflect on just being a kid and seeing my idols win these awards. So if I look at it like that, it means everything. And also being from where I’m from, to walk away with it, it just means a lot to those kids and the future of Queenstown and music”
At the start of the month, the uTatakho rapper had a heartfelt interview with Riky Rick on his podcast, LAB LIVE, that brought both the rappers and fans to tears with the star later tweeting that, the making of this album saved his life.
