On 21 August 2019, the team from Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa took to the streets of Johannesburg’s Alexandra township to collect waste sprawled across the community. From 09h00 – 12h00, Juskei Park 2 was converted into a mass clean up; where the young and old pulled up their sleeves and joined in contributing to the upliftment of the community.
During the clean-up, volunteers on the day witnessed Bonaqua bringing to life the importance
of collecting and recycling plastic PET and other waste. Community members were encouraged to ‘collect, drop and swop’ their waste – a concept successfully trialled at the 2018 Global Citizen 100 Mandela Festival. This initiative forms part of The Coca-Cola Company’s World Without Waste vision – to collect and recycle 100% of its’ packaging by the year 2030.
On the second day of the activation, the Bonaqua Swop Shop was visited by esteemed guests such as Herman Mashaba and
MMC Nico De Jager, who enthusiastically participated and
loaned a helping hand for the day’s clean up.
“The global vision of a World Without Waste is something that The Coca-Cola Company cannot do on its own. That is why we collaborate with bottling partners, NGOs and government. It is a real honour and privilege to have the support of Mayor Herman Mashaba and MMC Nico De Jager during the clean-up”, explains Head of Communications for Coca-

The clean up was one of many scheduled around the country by Coca-Cola’s bottling partners that Bonaqua will be supporting in 2019.
Clean up volunteers were treated with new Bonaqua Still Pump flavours – Lemon, Peach, Berry – as well as Sparkling Naartjie, Litchi and Strawberry flavours.
At the end of the clean-up, Bonaqua and Coca-Cola’s bottling partner provided participants with a light lunch, drinks as well as yoghurt and fruit snacks. They also received t-shirts and caps; a small token of appreciation for partaking in the initiative. Other valued partners that contributed to the day’s proceedings include the City of Joburg, Pikitup and A Re Sebetseng.
For those who missed it, the Alexandra Swop Shop will be open and operational until 29 August 2019.
A Closer Look at The Bonaqua Swop Shop
The Swop Shop is a recycling initiative created by Bonaqua, a product of The Coca-Cola Company. The traveling pop-up recycling unit is an opportunity for local residents to turn their waste to a reward. True to its’ vision, the Swop Shop is made out of used Bonaqua water bottles, showcasing the versatility and functionality of recycling.
How does it work? Community members collect and then drop any PET bottles (plastic bottles) in exchange for different useful items and novelties.
