ABOUT GABA CANNAL
Gaba Cannal, born Khaka Yena in the heart of Johannesburg’s East Rand, is one of the true pioneers of Amapiano—one of the world’s most infectious music genres today.

From the very beginning of his career, Gaba was ahead of the curve. Recognizing the potential of Amapiano early on, he established his own record label, Gaba Cannal Music, becoming the first official stable in the Amapiano scene. This bold move led to collaborations with some of the genre’s most influential artists, including De Mthuda, Kwiish SA, Da Muziqal Chef, and El’kaydee, while also working alongside fellow Amapiano pioneer, Master Jay.

But it wasn’t just his business acumen that set Gaba apart, it was his unmatched production skills. Drawing from his roots in house music and his deep love for gospel, Gaba’s soulful yet danceable sound helped define the early days of Amapiano, long before the log drum became a signature of the genre. His music brought energy and joy to the streets of the kasi, and soon, his infectious beats began to resonate far beyond South Africa.

Over a decade later, Gaba Cannal’s music continues to captivate audiences across South Africa, while his fanbase has grown to include listeners from neighboring countries like Mozambique, Botswana, and Namibia.
From his pioneering production to his influential role in shaping the Amapiano movement, Gaba Cannal’s legacy as the Godfather of Amapiano is firmly cemented—and he’s just getting started.
