South Africa – Luna Raye, South Africa’s new rising star on the music horizon, is set to captivate the world with her debut single “Girls Wanna Have Fun”. Penned by renowned songwriter Baby S.O.N., the highly anticipated track was released on National Women’s Day, 9 August 2024.
At just 21, Luna Raye, born Lintle (Didi) Lesela, promises to shake up the music scene with her fresh sound and magnetic stage presence, celebrating her expression of women’s empowerment through her music.
“The moon, or ‘luna’ in Latin, is often associated with femininity, mystery, the rhythm of time and the emotional side of human nature, which are themes commonly explored in R&B music. These are expressed in many forms in my identity and artistic vision,” says Luna Raye.
Behind the stage persona lies Didi, a soft-spoken, alluring young woman who transforms into a powerhouse performer the moment she steps into the spotlight. Luna Raye’s journey to musical stardom began early in her life, where her innate talent and love for music were immediately evident. Her passion for musical expression was further fuelled when she secured the lead role in the iconic musical “Annie” at the tender age of 12. In this role, she defied stereotypes and showcased her exceptional vocal and performance talent. Luna Raye continued to dedicate herself to years of voice training and dramatic art studies, earning herself distinctions in both disciplines.
“I’ve always wanted to be a singer; I AM A SINGER,” Luna Raye declares boldly, affirming her unwavering passion for music.
Despite her meteoric rise in the music industry, Luna Raye remains grounded, pursuing her final year of Criminology studies at the University of Pretoria. Refusing to be confined to a single genre, her musical versatility spans R&B, Jazz, House, and Amapiano, drawing local inspiration from fellow South African artists as well as her aunt, a renowned German R&B singer-songwriter.
Empire Music South Africa immediately recognized Luna Raye’s talent, signing her under the mentorship of esteemed music executive Refiloe Ramogase, paving the way for her ascent to stardom. “Luna Raye is a force to be reckoned with in the music industry,” says Innocent Nkosi, Head of Territory – South Africa. “Her natural talent, dedication, and passion for music set her apart, and we are excited to support her journey to stardom.”
Luna Raye’s debut single is just the beginning, with plans to release another single in October followed by an EP before the year’s end.
“Girls Wanna Have Fun” is now available for streaming and download, marking the dawn of Luna Raye’s musical legacy and celebrating National Women’s Month in a uniquely powerful way.
