Sunday, 15 December – Cape Town: Last night, six of South Africa’s finest DJs battled it out for a chance to be crowned the 2019 Red Bull 3Style champion. After an intense 90 minutes of what could be considered the DJ’ing Olympics, DJ Gremlin ultimately walked away with the title and an opportunity to compete in the world finals taking place in Moscow, in April 2020.
DJ Gremlin’s track selection and mixing skills were impeccable, he definitely had the crowd’s attention within the first few minutes of his set – leaving no stone unturned to ensure that he claimed victory to be crowned South Africa’s top party rocker.
“This was my third time entering Red Bull 3Style and I finally won it. I am very excited and happy to be representing my country in Russia next year. Thank you to everyone that supported me,” said DJ Gremlin.
In the true style of Red Bull Music 3Style – each DJ had to incorporate three different genres of music in their 15-minute set. The sets were judged on skill, music selection, originality and overall crowd response.
The party began with stellar performances from DJ Kixi and 2011 Red Bull 3Style world champion, Hedspin. Cape Town music enthusiasts who came out in numbers to witness the prestigious DJ battle and had no idea that they would be treated to a number of acts from their homegrown talent. This gave them a glimpse of what the night had in store for them.
The finalists showcased their skills and did their utmost best to show their rivals why they were in the finals. Local legend Ready D, Hedspin and DJ Espinosa, the current 2019 Red Bull 3Style World Champion, were amongst the judges who had the difficult job of crowning this year’s winner.
Judge DJ Ready commented: “Judging the competition was really tough, the level of DJ’ing in South Africa has really increased and we are headed in the right direction. Congratulations to DJ Gremlin, he blew us and the and the audience away with his music selection. He took a lot of risks and that scored him very high.”
